Eight words worth knowing

These eight will carry you a long way. The full glossary defines the specialist terms used across the site.

Church
The worldwide Christian community, a particular tradition, or a local congregation. Context tells you which meaning is intended.
Doctrine
A teaching, or an organised account of what Christians believe.
Creed
A concise public statement of shared Christian belief, often used in worship or teaching.
Council
A gathering of church leaders called to address questions of teaching, practice, or unity.
Canon
The collection of books a community receives as Scripture. Christian traditions do not all use an identical collection.
Tradition
Teaching and practice handed down through a Christian community; the word can have different authority in different churches.
Communion
Two senses. The Lord’s Supper, also called the Eucharist; and a family of churches joined by shared teaching, worship, and oversight, such as the Anglican Communion.
Heresy
A teaching formally judged incompatible with the faith by a church or communion. Always ask who made the judgment, when, and why.
